Biotin sits near the top of nearly every hair-growth supplement list, gummy or capsule, usually in doses far above what a typical diet provides. Its popularity is not really in question. What's less settled, and what the marketing rarely engages with directly, is whether taking it does anything for hair that isn't already biotin-deficient.
Multiple independent reviews have now asked exactly that question, working from the same body of clinical literature. Their conclusions are consistent, and they don't match biotin's reputation.
What biotin actually does in the body
Biotin, also called vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a cofactor for several enzymes involved in metabolizing fatty acids and amino acids. True biotin deficiency is uncommon in people eating a varied diet, and it produces a recognizable set of symptoms, including hair thinning, but also skin rash and neurological symptoms, not hair changes in isolation.
The supplement logic rests on that connection: if biotin deficiency can cause hair thinning, biotin supplementation should reverse it. The gap is in generalizing that logic to people who were never deficient in the first place.
What the reviews actually found
A systematic review of PubMed literature on biotin and hair or nail growth identified 18 case reports meeting its criteria. Every one of them involved patients with an underlying pathology, whether an inherited or acquired biotin deficiency, that plausibly explained the improvement. The reviewers explicitly noted these situations are uncommon, and concluded there was a lack of sufficient evidence for supplementation in healthy individuals without documented deficiency.[1]
A separate, more recent literature review specifically searching for studies on oral biotin and hair growth or quality found only three studies meeting its criteria after excluding case reports. The highest-quality of the three, double-blind and placebo-controlled, found no difference between the biotin and placebo groups. The other two studied narrow populations (patients on a specific acne medication, and patients recovering from bariatric surgery) and had substantial methodological limitations. The reviewers' conclusion was direct: the popularity of biotin as a hair supplement is not supported by high-quality studies.[2]
A more recent systematic review, following formal PRISMA methodology and registered in advance, examined ten studies and reached a similar verdict: biotin taken alone did not show consistent benefit on objective hair growth measurements. Where improvement was reported, it typically came from combination supplements, making it impossible to credit biotin specifically. The review also found inconsistent evidence for "low" biotin levels being common in people with hair loss to begin with, and no significant difference in biotin levels between people with a specific hair-shedding condition (telogen effluvium) and healthy controls.[3]
The deficiency question, and why it's genuinely contested
One study specifically measured biotin levels in 541 women complaining of hair loss and found 38% had deficient levels, with another 49% in a "marginal" range.[4] That's a substantial number, and it's the strongest piece of evidence for biotin mattering in at least some real-world hair loss cases.
It's also the most contested finding in this literature, and worth reading carefully rather than at face value. Critics of the same data have pointed out that a meaningful share of those deficient women had known risk factors for biotin deficiency independent of their hair loss, including gastrointestinal disease and use of certain medications, and roughly a third had a co-occurring scalp condition that could account for the hair symptoms on its own. Whether biotin deficiency was the cause of the hair loss, or simply present alongside it, isn't resolved by that data. A separate analysis reviewing the same landscape of evidence concluded that despite biotin's social media popularity, no randomized controlled trial has actually tested (let alone confirmed) its efficacy for any type of hair loss.[5]
The honest summary: biotin deficiency is a real, testable condition, and correcting a confirmed deficiency is reasonable. Whether undiagnosed marginal biotin status is a meaningful driver of hair loss in the broader population remains genuinely unresolved, not quietly settled in either direction.

A safety detail worth knowing regardless
Independent of whether it helps hair, biotin supplementation carries one specific, well-documented risk: high-dose biotin can interfere with common laboratory blood tests, including thyroid function tests and troponin, the marker used to help diagnose a heart attack. This isn't a hair-care footnote; it's been significant enough to prompt a formal safety communication, and survey research has found many physicians are unaware of it or don't routinely ask patients about biotin use before ordering tests.[2]
If you take a biotin supplement, it's worth mentioning to any doctor ordering blood work, particularly around thyroid testing or an emergency evaluation. This applies regardless of whether the supplement is doing anything for your hair.
Where to start
For hair loss with no known nutritional cause, biotin supplementation doesn't have trial evidence behind it, and treating it as a default fix delays addressing whatever the actual driver is. If a diet is genuinely limited or a malabsorption condition is present, biotin deficiency is worth confirming with an actual blood test rather than assumed and treated blind. Hair loss that's sudden, patterned, or accompanied by scalp changes is worth a medical evaluation on its own terms rather than a supplement trial first.
